WordPress missing Visual Editor

I’m having a problem with my WordPress installation: The Tiny MCE visual editor is missing the “button bar” when I write posts. This is the bar that contains all the options for bold, italics, adding hyperlinks, and so forth. Not sure what is going on since one day it was fine and the next it wasn’t. I tried re-uploading the WP files to the website, but that didn’t help, nor did looking online for anyone having similar problems. I found this link with a fix, but neither of the two options worked for me. I also tried viewing the page in IE instead of Firefox (no difference) and also tried upgrading from 2.1.2 to 2.1.3 of WP (the upgrade was no problem, but it didn’t fix the TinyMCE problem).

Here is a thumbnail of the problem picture of missing icons. Click on the image to see it full-size.

Anyone have any ideas?

It looks like the java isnt working. Did you accidentally turn it off in your browser for your site?

That’s the weird thing. I also have the same blog running on my home pc (a linux box) and when I browse to it (from the same PC that’s showing the problem above and with the same browser), it works fine. I also have the same problems with the online site using IE (which also shows the local site fine as well).

So I would think it would be something on the server end?

I discovered some more insights on my problem that may help resolve it.

In further testing, I removed all my plugins and the problem went away. I then added them back to see which one was causing the problem. Unfortunately, it isn’t that simple.

The six plugins I’m using are:

    Advanced Admin Menus - v 2.1.1
    Akismet - v 2.0
    Counterize II - v 2.04
    Related Posts - v 2.04
    Sidebar Widgets - v 1.2.1.20070210b
    wp-cache - v 2.1.1

Removing all plugins - No problem
Each plugin by itself - No problem
AAMenus and Akismet only - No problem
AAMenus, Akismet, Sidebar Widgets only - No problem
AAMenus, Akismet, Sidebar Widgets & WPCache - No problem
AAMenus, Akismet, CII only - No problem

    All six - Problem
    All except AAMenus - Problem
    All except RelPosts - Problem
All except RelPosts & WPCache - Problem
AAMenus, Akismet, CII, RelPosts only - Problem

Any ideas why any of these plugins would cause problems on the “Write Post” tab of the admin page?

Could it be some kind of memory problem or configuration? I don’t have a problem with the same plugins on my local server copy (I cannot reproduce the problem locally). Additionally, I compared the local copy source “View Source” html of the Write Post page with the online copy and except for the address differences, the two are identical.

As a newcomer to WP, I don’t have any idea which plugin could be causing problems or why, so in the meantime, I will just have to continue to go through each permutation and see if I can make sense out of it.

As i though… a plugin problems. I used to have more than 10 plugin installed in WP. But then with these sort of compatibity problems, i now have only 4 active plugins. Those plugin developers just won’t or forget to updates thier plugins, i guess.

Hello, I have the same problem. But, when I upgraded to version 2.2 the problem disappeared, so, I change the wp-config.php in order to place the right language file of my blog and the problem happened again. I change the wp-config-php to the original but the problem still there.

    Anyone knows what is it?

Hello, I also have the same problem. I disabled the “Theme Switcher” plugin and magically the buttons of Tiny appears now. Maybe the problem could be in some plugins.

I’ve got the same issue too. Gosh, looks like this has been floating around since April 2007! I just upgraded my WordPress early this week and observed this issue. If resolved, would be glad if a solution can be posted here.

    thanks!

I found a solution in one of the comments here. A simple refresh (F5 in windows, Cmd R for mac) once the page loads brings the toolbar back.

I had the same problem and it was tied to the WP-SpamFree plugin. Once I disabled that, the buttons & editor returned to normal.

Note: I have about 5 other plugins that I regularly use and the editor works fine. It was only that specific plugin that caused a problem.

Also, don’t forget to make sure in your “my profile” section, under Users, that you have the boxed checked to use the visual editor.

    Hope that helps.

Well, amazing. Struggling with this problem for awhile and the simple suggestion above
worked. Simply do F5 for screen refresh. In future, my first attempt to solve problems will be to hit F5. Hoppefully this will save me a couple of hours each time!

    Guys,
Save yourselves a lot of grief and delete every wordpress off your web server.
Get CPanel and use the Fantastico Wizard to install WPress.

    Badda Bing, Badda Boom!
