Dartboard Cabinet – Coming Soon

I started work on my next woodworking project, a Dartboard Cabinet, this last weekend.  So far I haven’t spent much time, just glued up some boards for the cabinet case and back.  I plan on building the cabinet box with poplar for the top and sides and cork-lined plywood for the back.  I haven’t decided what to do for doors yet, but I suspect I’ll play around with creating an arched top on them.  This cabinet will be on the inside wall of the living room (opposite the Pool Cue Rack I previously built).

Since a dartboard cabinet can be pretty straight-forward, I’ve decided to complicate the project a bit by adding…lights!  Yep, LED lights to be exact.  I’m currently planning on having four LEDs around the cabinet box (essentially at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o’clock on the clock face) to illuminate the dartboard and an additional two on the inside of the doors where I plan on having the scoreboards (chalk boards, nothing too fancy). I’ll need to add a switch somewhere to turn it on and off and hide the batteries as well (it will run off 4 AA’s).

I’ve already created the necessary circuit board for the LEDs.  I just have to come up with a way to mount them on the cabinet so they are: a) secure; b) easily replaceable; and c) can’t get hit by the darts.

Should be fun! Stay tuned…

Bookcases for the Study – Part 4 (almost done!)

We picked up the crown molding for the bookcases and decided we liked it so much we’re going to go all the way around the room (so we went back and picked up some more).  That will need to be primed and painted before we install it.  In the meantime, we finally unboxed our books from the move and loaded up the shelves.  Laura then did some shopping for “decorations” for some final touches.

If you remember the discussion I had about whether or not to move the power outlet to the baseboard (and the decision against it), we ended up getting a lamp to sit above that on the “permanent” shelf.  I had to cut a hole through the shelf and installed a white plastic grommet (like you see in the top of a work desk) to allow the cord to go down to the bottom (and behind the lower shelf, which is adjustable).

So here are the bookcases mostly complete and the room is back to normal.  Just need to add the crown molding next!

Replacing an MP3 Player with a Walkman for a week

Click on the photo for a link to an article from the BBC about a 13 year old boy who replaces his MP3 player with his dad’s old Sony Walkman for a week.  It’s a very interesting look at “old” technology.  Is this what our kids will think of the iPhone 30 years from now? I wouldn’t be surprised if this is what they will think in less than 10 years…

Some interesting comments from the article:

  • It took him three days before he realized the tapes had a second side.
  • He was unhappy with the battery life of only 3 hours.
  • He created his own “shuffle” mode by holding the rewind button for a random amount of time before hitting play (until his dad warned him about the possibility of the player “eating” his tape!)

Bookcases for the Study – Part 3

When we last left the bookcases, all the woodworking was done (except the crown molding) and it was ready for priming and painting.  Well, here’s a picture of the primed bookcases (shelves were primed in the basement):

Bookcases for the Study – Part 2

So Laura and I did some more work on the bookcases: before Memorial Day weekend, we attached them to the wall and did some priming of the cases.  Then last weekend, I added most of the face frames and put all the shelves together.  Here’s a picture of the progress:

The baseboard has to be installed (and crown moulding will go on top to take it all the way to the ceiling).  Then we need to prime the whole thing and paint it.

Stay tuned!

Another funny video

Since the last Youtube video worked, let’s try this one (a viral video from Samsung)…

Robot Chicken: Star Wars (Youtube testing)

Just wanted to test being able to insert a youtube video into a blog post.  This is one of my favorite Robot Chicken sketches:

Let me know a) if you liked it and b) if you had any problems viewing it within the blog post.

I want this in my next GPS

Unplggd has an article about a design firm who created a horizon-less map of Manhattan.  As you can see below (and if you could imagine this view on your GPS), this would make navigation a lot better, especially if the horizon rotated to show your route…

Two US Teams in Formula One in 2010?

PlanetF1.com is reporting that Formula One may have not one, but two US teams next year.  Since Laura and I became fans of F1 a couple years ago, this is great news!  Hopefully they will also consider adding back a US race (I believe they are discussing coming back to Indy).

Joke of the Day

Saw this today and it made me laugh… I especially love that the example is jelly beans.
Hard alcohol is the only thing you put in your body that actually comes with a story. It’s like, ‘You want some tequila?’ ‘No, dude, the last time I had that….’ It doesn’t happen with anything else. ‘Do you [...]
